I feel as though the world has forgotten the true definition of this word. Well, there are many forms of depression, and I am in no position to argue anyone’s personal problems, but it’s the people who abuse this word, that I am addressing.
Depression is not when you can’t afford the newest phone, that upgrade you want to your car, or when your rent is a little higher then what you want to pay.
Depression is not when you work a job that you don’t exactly like, or when that really cute boy/girl won’t pay attention to you.
Everyone has their own form of depression when they go through it. They have their own methods of dealing with it, living with it, and if they are strong enough, their own way of getting out of it.
So please, if you are one of the few people out there, that have had the opportunity to lead a normal, average, or privileged life, please watch what you say to those that finally sum up the courage to talk about such depression.
Phrases like; I understand, oh yeah I’ve been there, I know how you feel, and I understand, should never be said.
I don’t want sympathy. Your sympathy only pisses me off. Empathy is ok, but apologizing for what I’ve been through and what I’m going through doesn’t help in any way.
Depression is not something to mess with. It’s not something to “understand” or explain. Please, learn to tread lightly on this subject. If someone wants help, they will tell you. If they need help, you will know.
Depression is much more then just a word, or a state of mind, and needs to be treated like it.
